Beyond Colors and Captions: Inclusive Accessibility

Presented by:  Bela Gaytán of IntuiBel

Bela Gaytán is smiling while looking to the sideWhen designing with accessibility in mind, the first two courses of action are usually to include captions or transcripts and to use colors with sufficient contrast. These are great, but accessibility is so much more! In addition to providing equal access to individuals with hearing and vision disabilities, we need to expand to the many other disabilities that need to be included. In this session, you’ll learn how to better support the groups that are often left out in accessibility, such as those that are neurodivergent, those having mobility impairments, users with a different native language, and more. We’ll also learn the importance of learning from those having lived experiences with inaccessibility.

About our Speaker:

Known for her authenticity, transparency, and vulnerability, Bela unapologetically disrupts spaces to create change with a focus on IDEAS: inclusion, diversity, equity, accessibility, and social justice. She leverages her intersectional identities as a queer, neurodivergent, disabled Chicana daughter of field workers to teach with an emphasis on lived experiences of marginalized folks.

Bela is a multipotentialite, infusing her diverse passions into her work. She holds a Bachelor of Business in Human Resources Management and a Master of Education in Learning and Technology. She is currently working towards her Doctor of Education in Performance Improvement Management. She embraces being a nerd for learning and is always hungry for more.

Bela is the founder and Inclusive Learning Specialist at IntuiBel. She is an IDEAS Consultant, instructor, and coach. Bela also serves as an IDEAS Practitioner for NASA and The Equity Consortium and as a Board Member for DisArt.

As a recognized speaker on IDEAS and Learning and Development (L&D), Bela has presented for organizations such as Lesbians Who Tech, the University of Missouri, WordPress Accessibility Day, and Expedia. Her story of perseverance has been featured on Google Developers' blog, Bloomberg News interviewed her for her disability advocacy, and she is recognized as a top 100 LGBT+ Future Leader Role Model.
